David is 82 years old. He was born in Chilton County, Alabama. His family moved North in 1943 for opportunity.

On life in Alabama: “I went to a little school. Must have been six rooms in that school. It was segregated. In 1943 in Alabama segregation was the law. I made visits back. I think I was 12 and went back to visit my dad and other family members. Then we took the train, and when I got in to Birmingham, I was waiting for a train to go out to Bessemer where my dad lived and the window was closed. I went to ask a question about when the train was going to run, and the lady said, ‘Hun, they’ll announce it, and the colored waiting room is over there.’”
