Skeeter

Skeeter was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia. He is 92 years old.

On life in West Virginia: “Back in the 30s it was segregated; it was very segregated. If we went to the movies, we had to sit upstairs. The schools were segregated. We had one school that started from kindergarten and went all the way to the twelfth grade called Kelly Miller. It was the only school for most of the Afro-American kids. My mother went there. I went there off and on for two years. The white school was in a different part of town. The town was segregated. You didn’t feel it because you never were involved in it because where we lived at—when you hear the term ‘uptown,’ that’s what it meant—we lived ‘down,’ and the town was ‘up.’ Where we lived was mostly the Afro-American community. It was on a couple of streets. I go back and forth home every now and then.”
