On life in the South: “I integrated a pool one time. I got tired of going across town. There was a [white] pool across the railroad tracks. They wouldn’t let me in. I got up on a building and dived in. Everybody got out of the water. I was in elementary school. They had us on the news for swimming in the water. My friend got a whooping. We wasn’t scared of nothing.”
