Miguel left his wife in Honduras to seek asylum in the United States. Smugglers charged him $3,000 for the trip through Mexico and across the border. After arriving in America, he and his 10-year-old son spent several nights in the Border Patrol’s detention center in McAllen, nicknamed La Hielera—The Cooler or The Icebox—because it is so cold. They will travel to Baltimore to await their hearing in immigration court.
