The scallop shell is the symbol of St. James and the symbol of the Camino. Many pilgrims have scallop shells tied to their packs. In earlier times this was proof that one was a true pilgrim and eligible for better treatment along the route. The Camino is well-marked; the scallop shell appears on signs and posts along the way.
